Armada appointed member of IRR Drafting Committee by BFAR

Dr. Noel A. Armada, dean of the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CFAS) was appointed member of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) Drafting Committee of the Amended Philippine Fisheries Code by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Aug. 11.

Agriculture secretary Proceso Alcala has signed the 89-page IRR provisions of RA 10654 or the act that amended RA 8550, otherwise known as the Philippines Fisheries Code of 1998. On Sep. 22 in Quezon City.

Armada was drafted after a 20-day process which was participated in by commercial fishing companies, government sector, civil society organizations, academe (which he represents), non-government organizations (NGOs) and fisherfolk representatives.

The IRR covers specific procedures on how to impose the penalties to fishers who committed illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.

“It also lays down the guidelines on the enforcement of various fisheries conservation measures, “ said Armada.
